Pigs

We have Berkshire cross and commercial pink sows.  We cross them with Duroc boars we have.  They are all bacon bacon pigs and really good at surviving our harsh climates with very little needs in the winter.  A bacon pig is classified as a pig that is longer then normal, having another set of ribs making the belly where the bacon is made from longer.

Each sow has their own pen and run and hut that she can farrow in.  The piglets are then raised with mom til they are several weeks old and we have no snow on the ground.  Then they are moved to the 1 acre plot to root around and be pigs.  Once the piglets are weaned we will sell some, but most of them will be raised here for butchering.  Yet others are raised and bred to sell as bred gilts.  We have three boars and can breed gilts to an unrelated boar.  All of the grain that is fed to the pigs is grown here.  We give them loose minerals that we buy in.  It is made for cattle with no salt and they seem to do very well on it.  We do not sell piglets younger then 8 weeks old.  We prefer 10 weeks.  That just ensures they are doing well without mom's milk.
